Feline Leukemia Vaccine (FeLV)

Feline Leukemia is actually caused by a virus. It is not a cancer, as the name suggests. However, it is responsible for more deaths in cats then any other infectious disease.

The infection begins in the tonsils and lymph nodes and continues through the blood stream to destroy the bone marrow, lymph nodes and intestinal tissue. The symptoms are extensive and devastating.

Transmission

Deadly Feline Leukemia VirusCats can contract Leukemia from mutual grooming, nose to nose contact, sharing dishes and litter boxes, cat bites and sneezing.

We recommend keeping cats indoors to avoid the possibility of contracting the virus from the feral cat population, which has a high incidence of this disease.

Prevention of Feline Leukemia

  • Make sure you vaccinate your cat annually,
    especially for outdoor cats.
  • Isolate new kittens until AFTER they are cleared by your vet. Contact Hartwood for an appointment.
  • Leukemia test all new kittens and untested adult cats!
