Canine Influenza

The Canine Flu is a relatively new virus that, unfortunately, dogs have not built a natural immunity to yet. It is highly contagious and very easily transmitted between dogs.

The first evidence of the Canine Flu was on a Greyhound racetrack in Florida in 2004. The closet outbreak to Fredericksburg to date was a boarding facility in Dumfries, VA.

The incubation period of this virus is two to four days. The virus can be shed up to seven to ten days after the onset of symptoms.

Symptoms

  • persistent cough
  • nasal discharge (green in color)
  • fever
  • loss of appetite
  • in many cases develops into secondary pneumonia with difficulty in breathing

Testing and Treatment

A blood sample and nasal swab can be taken to determine whether your pet is positive. Treatment consists of a round of antibiotics and rest. The Canine Flu can be fatal if pneumonia occurs and left untreated.

At this time, Hartwood Animal Hospital is not requiring this vaccine for boarding or grooming. However, we do have the vaccine to offer for those pets that will need it elsewhere.

Vaccination

The Canine Influenza Vaccine will be given to dogs case by case, determined through an exam.

The initial vaccination requires a 2nd booster 2-4 weeks after the first vaccination.

Prevention

  1. Vaccinate annually.
  2. Young, geriatric, and immune compromised dogs are at higher risk to become infected with the Flu.
  3. Keep unvaccinated dogs away from unfamiliar dogs.
  4. Be cautious with dog parks, daycare, boarding and grooming facilities.
