Distemper

Canine Distemper in African Wild Dog (CDC)Distemper is a highly contagious viral disease with respiratory, gastrointestinal (GI) and central nervous system damage. It is transmitted through respiratory secretions and contact with infected bodily fluids and feces. Most dogs will show signs of a severe cold, although seizures, pneumonia, and bronchitis are not uncommon.

Mortality rate of Distemper is close to 80%, and even if they survive, their body may be compromised for the rest of their life.

*Note: Canine Distemper is not related to feline distemper.

Hepatitis

Hepatitis is a viral disease that is caused by the Adenovirus, affecting the liver and eyes. This disease causes seizures, renal failure, glaucoma and corneal edema.

Hepatitis only affects dogs and has a high mortality rate. It is transmitted by nasal discharge and urine. Recovered patients can shed the virus for up to nine months.

Parvovirus

Parvovirus is a highly contagious disease that causes severe GI upset and affects the lymphatic system, leading to bloody diarrhea, depression, vomiting, anorexia, dehydration and immune suppression.

It is typically found in puppies under the age of 6 months, unvaccinated pets, and senior patients.

It is fatal if left untreated.

There are Parvo outbreaks in Animal Shelters and breeding facilities every day. Certain breeds are more susceptible to Parvovirus such as: Doberman Pinchers, Rottweilers, Pit Bulls and German Shepherd Dogs.

Parainfluenza

Parainfluenza is a contagious virus that causes upper and lower respiratory infections. Symptoms resemble that of a cold.

Respiratory infections in puppies can be life-threatening.

Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a severe infection caused by a bacterium. Leptospirosis is transferred through urine contaminated water or any direct contact with the urine of an infected animal or wildlife. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, dry cough and conjunctivitis.

This disease CAN be transferred to humans!
