Pet Insurance

What is Pet Insurance?

Pet Insurance programs offer financial reimbursement for expenses incurred during emergency visits, routine annual wellness exams, vaccines and preventative medications. It is beneficial to insure all pets to aid in recovering some or all cost incurred by your pets medical care.

Topics to consider when choosing an insurance company:

-         Stability of the company: How long has it been in business? How many employees in the company?

-         User Friendly: Claims should be readily available online as well as a toll-free number with a live adviser offered.

-         Premium/Coverage: It’s important to inquire about the premium as well as the add-ons that may increase cost.

-         Reimbursement: How long does it take to be reimbursed? How easy is it to file a claim?

-         Transparency: Companies should clearly spell out limits and coverage. Requirements for things such as “usual and customary” should be published in the claims.

-         Pre-existing Conditions Coverage: Some companies limit coverage for pre-existing conditions that can easily run up the bill. Make sure you understand the terms of pre-existing, hereditary or congenital and how easy or difficult it is to collect.

-         Excluded Pets: Companies can choose to not enroll a pet over a certain age, or specific breeds.

-         Wellness Coverage: Not all companies cover wellness exams.

-         Reputation:  Do your peers know and trust the company? Does the company exhibit at Veterinary conferences or support the profession in other ways?
