AVMA Jerky Treat Warning

It has recently come to our attention that the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has issued a warning regarding jerky treats manufactured in China. This warning is a separate warning from the previous pet food recalls issued earlier this year.

Signs to watch for are: not wanting to eat, lethargy, depression, vomiting, and diarrhea. You may notice signs of illness several weeks after ingestion of the treats. In some cases, pets develop kidney issues as well. Should your dog or cat experience any of these symptoms please contact us at 540-286-2855.

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is currently testing treats to determine the cause of the toxicity. At this time no contaminant has been determined but melamine, which was found in the previous warning, has been ruled out as the source of the problem.

A list of affected brands of treats has not been released but all complaints of illness have involved jerky treats manufactured in China. I highly recommend you be vigilant in determining where your pets’ treats are manufactured.
